Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple was built from 1749 to 1755 during the reign of the Peshwas by Balaji Bajirao Peshwa (Nanasaheb Peshwa), who were prominent rulers in the Maratha Empire. The total cost of construction was 11,426 Rupees, 8 Aane, 6 Paise as per the available records.

The architectural grandeur of the Baneshwar Temple reflects a blend of traditional Maratha and Hemadpanthi styles. The temple complex comprises intricately carved stone structures, showcasing the craftsmanship of the artisans of yesteryears. The main sanctum, housing the lingam of Lord Shiva, is adorned with ornate carvings and sculptures, creating a sacred ambience that captivates visitors.

    Portugese Bell

The temple hosts an important bell which was captured by Chimaji Appa after defeating the Portuguese in the battle of Bassien in 1739. The bell has the year 1683 and a Cross on it, which depicts that the bell belonged to a church and was transported as a token of victory. The same kind of 4 more Portuguese bells can be found at Bhimashankar Temple, Omkareshwar Temple (Pune), Shiva Temple (Menavali-Wai) and Ramling Temple (Shirur).

    Sacred Pools (Water Tanks):

One of the distinctive features of the Baneshwar Temple is its sacred twin water pools. Devotees believe that the water from these tanks possesses divine properties and is capable of purifying the soul. The serene surroundings of these water bodies add to the overall spiritual experience of the temple visit.
