Lonar Lake was created by a meteor impact during the Pleistocene Epoch. This saline soda lake is situated in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra. 570,000 years old lake got 1.8 Kms rim and amazingly 14 temples within the crater. Oval shaped basin of the lake is surrounded by teak trees jungle and presents amazing beauty of the nature.
Mention about the lake can be found in Skanda Purana, Padma Purana and even in Aaina-i-Akbari. The region was under influences of various great kingdoms like Satavahanas, Chalukyas & Yadavas. Presence of Yadavas & Chalukyas can be depicted in various temples through amazing arts & sculptures. Gomukh Temple, Kamlaja Devi Temple, Mora Mahadev Temple & Mungalyacha Mandir can be names of the temples within the area to be specifically mentioned. Daitya Sudan temple which is located in the heart of Lonar town is one of the best example of Hemadpanti style of structure and Chalukyan Arts.
Mythology: There’s an interesting story here too. Lord Vishnu is said to have come down to this place in the form of a young, handsome boy called Daitya sudan to slay Lonasura or Lavanasura, the demon who lived under the Earth in this area along with his sisters. Daitya Sudan killed the demon in a battle which ended up in creating the Lonar Lake.
Lonar Lake is now a famous tourist spot. Well connected with roads, the town provides all required amenities to it’s visitors.
